From The Jakarta Globe, 14 Aug 2010

At first glance, it seemed like the kind of typical Sunday activity seen at any church. Members of the congregation woke up early and gathered with the intention of cleaning up the church before the service started.

This, however, was the Batak Christian Protestant Church, also known as HBKP Filadelfia, in Ciketing, Bekasi which was in the newspapers the last few weeks. And for the church members, this wasn’t typical housekeeping.

“A few unidentified men came the night before with a pickup truck and unloaded manure in front of our church,” the Rev. Palti Panjaitan told the Jakarta Globe in an exclusive interview.

By 9 a.m., the cleanup was almost complete and the regular Sunday service was able to proceed. But for the church’s congregation, this was just one among many incidents that have literally tested their faith.

Like many congregations in Indonesia, the members of HBKP Filadelfia are fighting for the freedom to practice their religion.

On Jan. 12, the church was sealed off at the order of the Bekasi district chief, who was responding to pressure from local groups.

The congregation’s members were forced to worship by the roadside until the church was eventually reopened.

The congregation, which currently numbers more than 500, was formed over 10 years ago. They used to hold services at members’ homes, but residents began to object.

They then purchased a shop where they could hold their services, an action that was again met with protests, this time by members of the local faith-based group Forum Komunikasi Umat Islam.

In 2007, the congregation finally built a makeshift church on land members had purchased.

But the debate over religious freedom in Indonesia has heated up again as two Islamic hard-line groups, the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) and the Islamic People’s Forum (FUI), have protested, sometimes violently, the existence of another HKBP church in Pondok Timur Indah, Bekasi.

About 20 members of the church were allegedly chased and beaten with sticks last Sunday by protesters believed to be linked to the FPI.

Muhali Barja, from FPI Bekasi, said the group believed the church group was breaking the law. “We want them to cool down and secure a proper permit to conduct prayers in a church. If they follow regulations, we will not interfere,” he said earlier this month.

Palti said his congregation followed regulations by collecting signatures of consent from the residents of the neighborhood where the church was to be built.

They also officially filed their building permit with the city administration about three years ago.

“The regulations said we should collect 60 signatures of neighbors of different faiths. So far, we’ve collected 300,” Palti said, referring to a 2006 joint regulation issued by the ministries of religious affairs and home affairs.

Despite their best efforts, however, the congregation was still unable to obtain the necessary permit from the Bekasi administration.

But on Friday, Bekasi Mayor Mochtar Mohamad said that while the church was waiting for its permit, the city would provide it with a building able to accommodate up to 200 people for services.

The mayor said the congregation could begin using the building this Sunday.

But does the nonexistence of a permit justify attacks?

During a cross-religion conference on Monday, Hasyim Muzadi, a former leader of Indonesia’s largest Muslim organization, Nahdlatul Ulama, said acts of intimidation and violence could never be justified.

“Faith is a relationship between humans and God. Meanwhile, administration-related procedures for a house of worship is a worldly matter and not a transcendental one,” he was quoted as saying by state news agency Antara.

“The government has the obligation to protect [church groups], so those who have no direct interest in the permit request can’t get involved in the process.”

On Dec. 25, 2009, members of FUI paid a surprise visit to the church, forcefully putting a stop to Christmas celebrations.

“It’s an extraordinary violation of human rights,” the Rev. A A Yewangoe, the general chairman of the Indonesian Communion of Churches (PGI), said last week.

“Our Constitution guarantees the right of every citizen to worship according to his or her own faith.”

The Setara Institute for Peace and Democracy, a human rights organization, has already recorded 28 violations of religious freedom in Indonesia between January and July this year. Christians are not the only targets of religious violence.

For years, members of Ahmadiyah, a minority Muslim sect, have been the target of hard-line Islamic groups.

Two weeks ago, an Ahmadiyah mosque in Kuningan, West Java, was attacked by a mob demanding that the mosque be closed.

“As a practicing Muslim, I feel very much concerned with violent attacks in the name of Islam,” said a Jakarta resident, Titis Sapto Raharjo, when asked about the attacks. He said people of different religions needed to live in harmony.

“The majority shouldn’t feel superior and see those in the minority as a lower class of people.”

The Rev. Saron, from Gereja Duta Injil (Ambassador Bible Church), said: “It’s an open secret that it’s difficult to get a permit to build churches [in this country].”

Since 1998, the church has been holding Sunday servicse at a hall on the sixth floor of Mall Ambassador in South Jakarta.

“I don’t think that it’s the government, but it is others behind the curtains who object [to the building of churches in the country],” Saron said, referring to fundamentalist groups.

Due to these difficulties, the number of churches holding services in malls and office buildings has mushroomed across the country.

To be able to hold their Sunday services at these locations, the churches have to get a gathering permit from the police and pay hefty hourly fees to the owners of the buildings.

“Still, we get complaints about causing traffic jams on Sundays,” Saron said.

Akbar Novi, a Muslim who considers himself a moderate, said it was often the “technical side” of mall-churches that got to him.

“I have nothing against Christians. In fact, many of my best friends are Christian. But they’ll tell you the same thing. When the already-crowded streets are even more crowded because of some house, or mall, or ruko [shop-house] or church, it gets on your nerves,” he said.

Fendi (not his real name), who said he was an “ID only” Christian, agrees with Akbar. “I pass by the Kayu Putih area [in East Jakarta] every day. It’s essentially a neighborhood road that’s grown exponentially because it leads to Kelapa Gading. But every Sunday or religious holiday, it gets extra crowded because the cars of a congregation that meets in one of the houses by the road. They take up a large portion of the street for parking. That’s just selfish, no matter the reasoning,” he said.

Yewangoe said Christians in the country needed to be extra conscious of how they proclaim their faith so they won’t be misunderstood.

“There are accusations of Christians trying to Christianize people. Unfortunately, there are indications that that might be true. For example, the banners that carry slogans such as ‘Win Indonesia for Christ.’ How would that make you feel [if you weren’t a Christian]?”

He also recalled an incident when a group of Christians assisted flood victims and said they were “slipping them verses from the Bible. Sometimes, we [Christians] tend to overact. If we want to help, just help. That’s a good enough deed.”

When complaints related to church services held inside malls or office buildings escalate to a serious level, the building management usually acts as a mediator. “So far, we haven’t had any serious problems,” Saron said, adding that she believes the “church also helps the tenants in the malls.”

Gereja Duta Injil holds six services every week and counts more than 12,000 members among its congregation.

Though they often complain about where they are forced to hold church services, there is no denying the attraction of a church inside a mall.

“It’s so convenient,” said Meidy Naomi, who attends services on the ninth floor of Plaza Bapindo in South Jakarta.

“[Churches in malls] are safe and well-facilitated, with parking, air-conditioning and clean toilets for the congregation. It’s almost like going to a party.”

The party may still be going, but it is faced with the possibility of ending soon. “Maybe they’ll also drive us out of the malls and buildings, with the thinking that malls should remain as malls and not churches,” Yewangoe said.

“When that happens, we’ll worship on the streets. And if they drive us away again, we’ll have to worship in front of the State Palace. Maybe then the president will notice.

“There are a lot of anomalies in this country,” he added. “When certain groups take over the functions of the government and yet the government does nothing about it, it could be a sign for the collapse of the nation.”

Whenever I attended a church service overseas I have often been asked how we Christians practiced our faith in a great country where the ultimate majority is Moslem. I said it was fine, until last week …..

Church attendees who gathered peacefully on a Sunday morning in Bekasi township, only 35 km away from home, were harassed, some beaten, all verbally abused by a band of usual extremist thugs who insisted to close the church and prohibited the congregation to enter their place of worship. Protests were abundant and the government statement condemning the act was issued 4 (four) days later.

May God forgive them.

Remember the chicken satay seller ? His only son has grown to a tall fine young man and cute in his own way, with very much Indonesian face feature and skin color. I never got to know his formal name but he used to be in my roster of school fee beneficiaries. He apparently dropped out of high school, understandably in view of his mother’s sickness a couple of months ago (she had to be hospitalized for a heart failure) so the family’s financial resources were depleted. And he is brave enough to take the responsibility as a young man, even at an early age of 16. He is now officially a fruit juice seller, and his juice stand on the main road to our neighborhood is visible from a few hundred meters away.
I often stop by his stand while driving on my way home, buy some glasses. Not out of pity but really his fruit juices are excellent; fresh and refreshing, and certainly full of vitamins. What fruits ? Orange, lime, carrot, guava, mango, star fruit, avocado, kiwi, dragon fruit, melon, durian, you name it … The price ? Before last week’s 20% hike, it was 50 cent (US) a glass. The photo above pictures him bringing out my order : carrot juice au fresh ….

In the past, I used to see people in the neighborhood gathered in front of somebody’s house to watch football matches in the open air. They place a TV set and plastic mattress on the street and watched the Finals of the World Cup or whatever cups together which normally lasted until dawn our time. Food and drink were freely circulated thanks to donation by all.
This year it was not the case …. I guess the reason may be due to financial situation, weather not permitting (anomaly today) and I don’t know. But the spirit is there, I watch children running with (faked) soccer jerseys in the neighborhood.

One of my neighbors, live in this weird, weird situation. The husband is the “odong-odong” driver that I wrote on last year, you remember; he is at the same time a night-watch man in the neighborhood, motorcycle-taxi driver, principal bread winner, husband and father to 7 children with 2 wives. But the wives happen to be another couple within the family.

A few months ago his first wife –who from time to time worked in my house replacing my maid when she was on leave- separated and then lived with another girl and resided in the same barrio. I was told that the girl was the “kept mistress” of the second wife in the first place. Oh, so complicated….., but never to the people there.

They live their life as usual, no raised eyebrows, no awkwardness, they help each other, help raise the children together, raise money together. When I discussed this at my work place, one of my colleagues remarked something very Indonesian: “May he or she return to the right path …”, and unexpectedly another colleague replied: “They certainly think this is the right path ….”. I shrugged.

Too bad I don’t have their picture here.

She is a beautician par excellence, she does facial acupressure, massage, crème-bathing, hair-dyeing, smoothing, re-bonding, cutting, waving, spa and massage-cum-peeling, you name it …..
Her name is Ratna. She apparently learnt her trade even before she married and having the precious skill, she rose above her peers in the neighborhood, managed to steal the heart of a guy 20 years her senior and became his “mistress” before she divorced him and flew to a city nearby Singapore harbor and worked in a beauty parlor there for a few years until her return to the same neighborhood last year.
She is about 30 years old with 2 kids and live with her mother who tend to the children. She proves to be handy all the time; we just call her on her cellular and she will be in our house within a few minutes. She charges “as you feel proper” (that’s the phrase she uses for her service fees) but ultimately we pay according to the market price.
I like her work tremendously; she massages my face while applying acupressure into it, or head or shoulder in the leisure and convenience of my own habitat. Do this while watching the TV and afterward have spa or deep bathe in your own bathroom. Phew…., you won’t find this in the western world, not with the tariff we Indonesian pay including all the advantages of home-servicing.
My daughter tweeted the service and immediately orders poured in, unfortunately she is able only to fulfill orders from addresses not too far away from home due to “problem with my transportation”, however she would not refuse being picked up by a chauffeur-driven car belonging to a rich and lazy lady 

Untung (literally means ‘lucky’) sat beside her dying sister, Siti, who mumbled incoherent words. He brought his ear nearer to her mouth to hear better as he wondered whether it was his tiredness that made him lose his hearing; he did not sleep the whole night on the chugging diesel engine train from his village in Central Java enroute to Jakarta. It was here in the capital that his mum Jeni and dying elder sister Siti have been living for years. Somebody he did not recognize and claimed to be his mum’s neighbor in Jakarta came by to pick him bringing the bad news that his sister was dying and wanted to see him before she died. They went to the train station immediately and caught a train bound for Jakarta in time. He barely ate before and during the 12-hour journey. His coming to Jakarta to be on her death bed was not in vain. A few minutes later she collapsed to never wake up again. The neighbors who were taking care of her for the last 7 days closed her eyes, folded her hands and cried “God is great” in Arabic. He passed to oblivion for some time which he felt like days and was being tended again by the same person who took him from his village yesterday.
On his gaining consciousness he looked around. It was in a shack, the roof was so low and the room so tiny. The good neighbors already took her body outside to clean and wrap in white cloth ready to be taken on a stretcher to a public cemetery. “God is great!” people kept praying while they lowered the body to the hole on the ground. “Soon this will over”, he whispered on and on as he leaned towards an unknown man next to him seeking strength, he felt lame and numb all over his body. The next time he remembered he was in that tiny and low shack again. And the same men and women were surrounding him, putting him at ease with fresh cloths, water and food. They told him the full story.
Jeni, Siti and Untung came to the neighborhood a few years ago looking for work and like many others with no education and no skill, ended up scavenging, or doing odd jobs, selling fruit and vegetables or whatever there was to do. They built their little shack there and soon after Jeni remarried to a food seller, their life however did not get any better and Siti went her own life to work –people hushed hushed- in a red lamp district in downtown Jakarta. The little boy Untung had to go back to the village and lived with his maternal grandmother again like before. Siti flourished at her work, developed herself into a young woman with good dresses and make up and often returned home to the mother in the neighborhood with help of money and more. As if not enough sad, Jeni developed sicknesses, mostly not understood, but she could not go to work at all. Neighbors whispered that Jeni was simply lazy ….
A month before Siti died she went home to her mother’s shack, ill with high fever and rash and could not even moved her limbs. In pity and solidarity the neighbors helped, bringing food, helped with some money so that they could go and check with a doctor. The two ladies in stone houses nearby were in intense telephone calling for help from a nearby public health center to no avail; they were not registered as legal inhabitants, did not have ID cards hence were not able or qualified to get free-medical-help-for-the-poor cards. The doctor-on-duty in the neighborhood church suggested her for hospitalization but was refused for obvious reasons. She was said to have HIV/AIDS ….. The food donations seemed to bring her overall condition better. Eggs, milk, fruit –oh she liked red apples most- sufficient rice and ionized water were abound. On the third day she managed to sit on the floor of the tiny shack and asked her mum to see her younger brother they left behind a few years ago.
Untung wiped his face with a handkerchief; beautiful people, so kind and so tender despite their poverty he thought as he bowed his head in gratefulness. “Don’t worry son,” said one man whom he called “uncle”, “in sickness and death, in health and prosperity we are one family, don’t forget that.”

I traveled a lot; both for my work and for holidays. I make myself and my family members mandatory to attend Sunday church service wherever we are during holidays. The result is certainly fascinating and giving me unforgettable experiences, especially when we attended a local church in local language or dialect. Many times we were the only people with brown skin, black hair and flat nose. That happened in Malta, Germany, Netherland, Switzerland, etc. In Malaysia we were mistakenly thought as locals, who are devout Muslims hence the raised eyebrows. Common questions were almost always : “How is Christianity in Indonesia?”
I always thought that they were either ignorant or heard too many bad stories from the TV.
I longed to tell them that we are okay most of the times, that Christianity here is taught in one single national language as well as hundreds of dialects. That the Bible has been translated into 87 different Indonesian dialects. That about 15 to 20% of the population are Christians including Catholics and as the total population is 220 million, Christians will make about 33-44 million people; equivalent to twice of Australian population.
Often I went to a Sunday service overseas in an almost empty church, while it is never the case here. The congregation of the church I belong to has about 700 families and the church next door has about the same numbers. On Sundays, the parked cars in front of churches cause traffic jams.
True, at times churches were the object of violence, maybe out of envy for Christianity grows exponentially and hence not to their likings.

It’s registration time for students of 9th grade as they head for the final National examination next month. Parents are nervous and scouring Senior High Schools (10th to 12th grade) with good reputation to register their kids. Including me. And soon I found out that those schools with reputation carried very high price tags  Consider this : being a single parent and (currently) hold not-so-high-salary like I used to 3 years ago before retirement, I felt it was beyond my affordability. The boy wants to enter the state school anyway where his siblings graduated from, and being a state school parents don’t need to pay huge amount, thanks to the system. The challenge is the exam’s performance index which is very high, one of the highest in this country, and hundreds of students will fight for seats in this school. So it’s like a 20 to 25% chances to get into. So we need to look out for back up. His first choice is a Catholic boys’ school which has a high standard of education and very high tuition. Our immediate alternative is the Christian Senior High School, the one within the group of schools my son is attending currently. The tuition and registration fee would be equivalent to 1/3 of the schools’ I explained earlier.
I reasoned cautiously with my son about the recent development. I told him of my financial situation, which is not as comfortable as it was, due to retirement (Oh yes, in this country your lifestyle will automatically downgraded when you are in retirement age, thanks to the bad, bad tax and social security systems). He said it was OK, although he did it tearfully. Gone are his hopes of joining a band of school boys who have been the talk of the town girls for the past 2 decades ….. I was also full of tears, thanking God for giving my son so much understanding.
The next day I suddenly remember something. Then in my morning prayer I pledged to God to give the money due for paying the ‘school with reputation’ to others, the needy ones in our neighborhood. With so much money I can assist 4 (four) school children for a year or two years maybe, and if my son would eventually enter the Christian Senior High instead of the state school, the number of students I can help will reduce into 2 (two). Fine, I am happy with the deal and commitment that I made. May the good Lord God be willing to agree with the deal also.
My son agrees with me and that is enough to make my day. I thank God repeatedly. And thank you son, for willing to share with others.
